[BATTAMBANG] – In a spirit of compassion and peace, on the night of December 18 and the morning of December 19, 2025, Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, Apostolic Vicar of Phnom Penh, accompanied by seven Buddhist abbots from Tram Kak District, Takeo Province, visited and provided relief aid to displaced families currently sheltered at various pagodas in Battambang Province. The charitable donations included essential food supplies such as rice, instant noodles, fish sauce, soy sauce, salt, milk, and fresh vegetables. Additionally, daily necessities and blankets were distributed to provide warmth and comfort. These displaced citizens fled their homes to seek refuge in temporary safe shelters at local pagodas following recent fighting and shelling along the Cambodia-Thailand border. During the heartfelt gathering, Bishop Olivier expressed his deep empathy, stating: “We hope these gifts will help alleviate your hardships and serve as an encouragement during this difficult time. We desire to see peace and mutual love for one another, living as one family. Most importantly, we pray for peace to return soon so that you can all return to your homes.” In addition to this mission, on the morning of December 18, Bishop Olivier also visited frontline soldiers in the Pursat provincial, alongside the Development Department of the Ministry of National Defense, in an atmosphere of close friendship, mutual respect and brotherhood. This joint activity serves as a vivid testament to the interfaith cooperation between Buddhism and the Catholic Church in Cambodia. It highlights their shared commitment to building peace and social harmony, standing together to support the nation’s people during times of crisis and suffering.
