KROPEU TRUM, Cambodia (UCAN) -– About 300 people, mostly women, attended a talk on domestic violence and gender equality in the family organized by Caritas Cambodia in Kandal province on Monday.
Toeuk Sopheak, who handles Caritas’ gender equality and anti-human trafficking program, told participants that domestic violence is mainly the result of a lack of education and low living standards.
During the event, held at Preak Tiet pagoda in Kropeu Trum village, some women participants shared their experiences of living with drunken husbands and domestic violence for years.
Caritas Cambodia is presently fighting domestic violence with programs on women empowerment and livelihoods.
In addition, it conducts programs on health and hygiene improvement, and disaster preparedness.
