PHNOM PENH (UCAN) — Caritas Cambodia is monitoring more than 200 families who lost their homes to a fire on the evening of March 8 in Tuol Kork district, Phnom Penh.
“Right now, our staff are going there to collect data of homeless families. We are not sure yet how we will help them,” said Sok Sakhan, Disaster Management Officer of Caritas Cambodia.
“After two weeks, we will know. Now, NGOs and the Red Cross are helping them with rice, tents and other essential items. We don’t want to duplicate their efforts.”
He added that from their survey, Caritas found 257 families had lost their houses. In addition, 21 students lost their rooms in a boarding house at Wat Neak Kavorn, a Buddhist temple.
Media reported that the fire started with an accident in a house. Some of the residents are now living under trees and amid the stupas of Wat Neak Kavorn.
